Little Dragon are no strangers to Sonar Festival. Having previously performed twice at Sonar by Day, this year 125,000 festival-goers would get the chance to see their unique and undeniable style of electronic pop at Sonar by Night and for many of us it would be the first time seeing them perform their fifth studio album ‘Season High’ released earlier this year.
Friday night DJ and presenter on Track Family Radio, Tottie, caught up with Yukimi Nagano right before their performance to talk about her personal experiences working in electronic music. “I have always had a lot of support with the guys and the band, it’s definitely harder going it alone as a woman in the industry.” We also find out how she prepares for live shows and her top 3 female artists of all time.
Her advice to girls trying to break it into the music industry, “Dont be intimidated by anyone, the sky’s the limit“. So on that solid piece of advise, get out there and show them who’s boss ladies.
This year Barcelona City FM presenters D.N.S & Tottie reported at Sonar Festival on a topic very close to their hearts; bridging the gender gap in electronic music and tech culture and talking exclusively to female artists performing at Sonar Festival 2017 – #WomenInSonar2017.
Catch up on all the interviews on the Barcelona City FM Facebook page and YouTube channel featuring some of the fantastic female artists who performed at Sonar Festival and Sonar+D this year.
Without a doubt one of the most exciting, innovative electronic music producers and live artist’ gripping the underground electronic music circuit the moment, Jlin cannot be defined by music genre or how danceable her productions are. The raw energy from her live set on the SonarLab stage at Sónar by Night on Friday this year was mind blowing. An injection of sonic soundscapes lifted a room full of Sónar’s more perceptive minds.

Barcelona has been one of the top tourist cities in the world and is continuing to stay on that list with a rapid growth of tourist traveling to the area. But it’s not something that the citizens of Barcelona are too happy about. The city passed a law this week to curb tourism as visitors have begun to overwhelm the city and anger the local residents when trying to live their normal life. Last year, the city’s 1.6 million residents were heavily outnumbered by an estimated 32 million visitors, about half of them were just day-trippers. The new law comes after more than 25 years of relentless promotion of the city as a tourist destination, and coincides with a planned “occupation” on Saturday of La Rambla, a street that has come to symbolize what many view as the excessive and unsustainable number of visitors.
Barcelona Urban Neighborhood and a few other organizations have organized community associations under the slogan “Barcelona isn’t for sale”. The protestors are calling for an end to property speculation, which is pricing residents out of the city, and to low-wage jobs in tourist service industry.
Even though we can understand that the residents want to keep their peace of living, it is also hard to regulate tourism in a whole city. It also is not a bad thing. Think about it! The tourists that are visiting, are bringing business and revenue to the local restaurants and small company owners. That is a way to keep the city going and provide money to the business that possibly need it. In a way, tourists are helping the community. It is understood that the city may be packed, citizens may not be able to enjoy their attractions here because it is full of tourists, but it would not be realistic for the city to completely dismiss tourists from coming into the city. There are pros and cons to everything.
A few citizens that are apart of the Neighborhood Assembly for Sustainable Tourism describes the negotiation as “very frustrating”. While taking a survey the was carried out by the city, residents voted that their biggest concerns was tourists invading their privacy and living.
We will hope that in the upcoming months once the summer ends, the citizens will feel a little more comfortable with the situation. Barcelona is a beautiful city as we all want to enjoy it.
June in Barcelona not only means the start of those sweaty sleepless summer nights, but also Sonar Festival is upon us. With Sonar in its 24th year and most highly attended to date, a record number of 124,000 festival-goers descended on the city for one of the most respected worldwide music festivals in electronic and advanced music
This year Barcelona City FM presenters D.N.S & Tottie were there from start to finish reporting on a topic very close to their hearts; bridging the gender gap in electronic music and tech culture and talking exclusively to female artists performing at Sonar Festival 2017 – #WomenInSonar2017.
Dutch singer/songwriter Sofie Winterson pulled out a beautiful performance on the Red Bull Music Academy presents Sonar Dome stage on Friday. Tottie caught up with Sofie after her performance to talk about her personal journey as a woman working in the electronic music industry, how she gets into her creative groove and which female artist she would like to collaborate with next.
Sofie comments: “I Loved playing Sonar. Even though most of our equipment was lost in our transit and we had to switch to rented gear which was quite stressful, we felt the performance went really well and the crowds were lovely. Barcelona is a magic place and I hope to be back for Sonar in the future.”
Over the next few weeks D.N.S and Tottie will be releasing all the interviews on the Barcelona City FM Facebook page and YouTube channel featuring some of the fantastic female artists who performed at Sonar Festival and Sonar+D this year.

Tattoos are becoming more accepted in the world as a form of creativity for the body. Some say that it is a way to express and describe who you are, while some view it as a destruction of your body image. Either way you put it, people are adding these interesting symbols, pictures, and images to make a statement.
Vivien Bodycote, 59, is a grandmother that you might be surprised to see. She has a passionate love for body art and has covered her body with more than 20 tattoos of Jose Mourinho. Yes, were talking about Jose, the former professional football player and the manager of the Premier League club Manchester United. Vivien says she gets weak at the knees at the sight of Mourinho and has dedicated her whole body to him. WHAAAT? Sounds outrageous.
Tony, 76, Vivien’s husband, has retired from working with concrete and has invested fully into Viven’s ink addiciton. He has said to have spent more than £800 of his pension on tattoos of Jose’s face for his wife’s body. THAT IS A TRUE INVESTMENT FOR SURE! I know some of you have celebrity crushes and an idol that you look up to. But how many of you would actually dedicate your entire body to this one person…PERMANENTLY?
Viven said in an interview, “I rarely go into town and not come back with another Jose tattoo. I must have 20 of just that man. He’s not just the special one, he’s the only one.” THE ONLY ONE? REALLY VIV? The price of her tattoos have varied with some being only £60 to £250. She has not even been to a football match since the 90’s, but when she attended with her father, she fell in love ever since. Just last week, she has gotten a quite large size tattoo of Jose’s face on her thigh. She has images of his faces on other parts of her body, but she said this is the biggest one yet.
A quite bazaar decision as well is that she said if Jose was to propose to her at any time, she would divorce her husband for him. That seems a little far fetched. I would feel bad if I was Tony. But hey, they might be able to come to an agreement in this situation. Let’s hope that Ms. Bodycote gets to finally meet Jose Mourinho so her dreams of meeting him can finally come to life.
Take a look at the pics below of her fantastic and extravagant art.
